FSS Exfoliation Enzyme PF is obtained by a combination of acidic and enzymatic hydrolysis of the extract of the flowers of Opuntia ficus-indica. This botanical, also known as prickly pear, is one of the most cold-tolerant of lowland cacti native to desert areas of Mexico. The desert provides a unique set of challenges to plant life such as extremely low humidity levels and elevated temperatures year round. The prickly pear is mostly noted for its ability to withstand extremely low humidity levels and high UV radiation. This plant’s secondary metabolites consist of a complex of enzymes and stress response elements that work synergistically to prevent damage and promote repair. In the case of the enzymes, their main role in the system is to boost carbohydrate metabolism to repair the damage caused during desiccation. Proteolytic enzymes are also essential to disintegrate the cellular walls within fruit so that the seeds may be released into the environment that contains all of the nutritive properties the plant needs to thrive.
Cosmetically, fruit enzymes have been used as a safe means of exfoliation. Exfoliation is an important segment of a skin care regimen, which serves to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells that traps both bacteria and sebum. The benefits of enzymes have also been known and practiced in Aryuvedic medicine as well as fold medicines for centuries.The enzymes in prickly pear are attributed with soothing skin irritations and exfoliated dead cells. Thus this botanical’s enzymes are capable of retaining proteolytic activity over a wide pH range.
Additionally, with its high flavonoid content, the Prickly Pear aids in preventing oxidative stress caused by UV Radiation. The plant can assist in soothing the skin by helping sunburn recovery.
