FSS SilDerm Acrylate
Silicone
provides functionality to cosmetic and personal care products which is almost
unparalleled by other materials. Often used to improve epidermal slip and increase
hair combability, silicone has reshaped the way formulators construct hair and
skin care products.
Creating a
copolymer of silicone grafted with polybutylacrylate may further enhance the functionality
of silicone by optimizing the chemical’s compatibility with solvents such as cyclomethicone,
dimethicone, hydrocarbon fluids, mineral oils, esters and fatty acids. Grafting
silicone with polybutylacrylate is achieved by
performing
a free radical polymerization of the silicone in the presence of
polybutylacrylate.
The
benefits of using such a material are seen with in the color makeup industry,
as the copolymer may be used as carriers and binders of pigments and fillers.
The material may also
enhance the adhesion of color on the skin, which allows formulators to use less
pigment to achieve the same color, while simultaneously
creating a
smooth, non-tacky feel.
Silderm
Acrylate may be used not only to achieve the aforementioned results, but it may also
be used as an emulsifier for silicone/oil emulsions as well as provide optimal
“water proofing” properties
for long lasting make-up wear. It may also help formulators stabilize
multi-phase systems. Silderm Acrylate is a clear liquid that is intended
for use as an ingredient in make-up products such
as
lipstick, foundation, mascara and blush.
