Trading with the European population is believed to have begun around 1904. The plant was cut down and macerated and subsequently fermented in a fashion similar to black tea. Generally the AO activity of Rooibos tea increases with brewing time indicating that the activity is most likely due to hydrolysis of the Flavonoglycosides, particularly the quercetin glucoside. This may indicate general anti-aging claims. In terms of other cosmetic claims, rooibos tea is thought to tighten skin, remove blemishes, and reduce irritation.
