Plump firm lips are one of the de rigueur fashion accessories of the moment. This trend exists not only in aging populations but also among an increasingly younger demographic. Today, consumers expect to be able to obtain cosmetic surgery-type effects from topical cosmetics. In order to achieve this we need to look at the injectable preparations available to the medical profession. Perhaps the most commonly used products are either purified collagen or reconstituted Human Tissue Matrix (HTM) to augment the naturally occurring lip tissue.
The question becomes how does one best delivery collagen into the lip? Most lip preparations are lipid-based eliminating the possibility of traditional systems such as liposomes. As an alternative we have developed a NanoVesicular System (NVS) based on phospholipids. This approach allows the incorporation of actives into traditional lip preparations while creating the potential to form penetrating vesicles directly on the lips. Because this system is anhydrous we can load it with dehydrated components of the HTM such as collagen, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid. Incorporation of the dehydrated matrix components assists in their penetration and allows them to swell rapidly forming a reconstituted HTM in situ. The chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid crosslink with the collagen, giving the matrix a distinct 3-Dimensional structure; creating a firm, supple aesthetic coupled with the sensation of rapid firming.
In order to maintain the firm appearance of the lip and address long term anti-aging claims we incorporate Collagen PrePeptide (G-P-Hyp). This tripeptide is the critical building block of native collagen. Its presence attracts and activates Keratinocyte Growth Factor (KGF) modulating tissue repair and remodeling (Reuhl et al., J Biol Chem. 2002 Jul 26;277(30):26872-8. Epub 2002 Apr 24). Not only does G-P-Hyp stimulate collagen production it also provides the added draw of a peptide based active ingredient.
