Unlike green tea which is made from mature tea leaves, white tea is made using the tender, uppermost buds and new leaves. Since there is minimal processing, the integrity of the phytochemicals in the leaves is preserved. It is these compounds that provide potent antioxidant activity to counteract extrinsic damage.
Derived from Camellia sinensis leaves, the process of making tea is believed to have originated in China more than 5,000 years ago. Camellia sinensis is native to southeastern Asia. It is a small, perennial, evergreen tree that can grow as tall as 40 feet in height. However, cultivated tress are pruned to heights between 2 and 3 feet. Tea leaves are used in cosmetic formulations for: Ayurvedic and astringent products.
