Of all the elements, gold in its pure state is undoubtedly the most beautiful. Gold is the most malleable and ductile metal; 1 oz of gold can be beaten out to 300 sq. ft. It is also a soft metal and is usually alloyed to give it more strength. When alloyed with other metals, the term carat is used to express the amount of gold present with 24 carats being pure gold. Artisans of ancient civilizations used gold lavishly in decorating tombs and temples and crafting exquisite objects. Aside from monetary uses, gold is used in jewelry and allied wares, electrical-electronic applications, dentistry, the aircraft-aerospace industry, the arts, and medical and chemical fields.

The claims for the medical benefits of gold date back many of thousands of years. Many ancient cultures, such as those in India and Egypt used gold-based medicinal preparations. Early applications of gold in China were in the treatment of ailments such as smallpox, skin ulcers and measles. In Japan, tradition suggests thin gold-foils placed into tea, sake and food are beneficial to health.

In medieval times, gold was often seen as beneficial for the health, in the belief that something that rare and beautiful could not be anything but healthy. Even some modern esotericists and forms of alternative medicine assign metallic gold a healing power. Some gold salts do have anti-inflammatory properties and are used as pharmaceuticals in the treatment of arthritis and other similar conditions. However, only salts and radioisotopes of gold are of pharmacological value, as elemental (metallic) gold is inert to all chemicals it encounters inside the body.

Gold and gold compounds have also historically been used in drugs for the treatment of a wide range of ailments. This use of gold compounds in medicine is called chrysotherapy. The Frenchman Jacques Forestier reported in 1929 that the use of gold complexes was beneficial in the treatment of arthritis. Later work after the Second World War demonstrated conclusively that gold drugs are effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis patients.

As mentioned previously, elemental gold is inert to all chemicals encountered in the body. Complexing elemental gold with proteins and/or carbohydrates may help to improve its bioavailability therefore increasing the ability of the body to process and utilize it. Fermentation can be used to make minerals/metals more bioavailable. Cultures of various yeasts and bacteria are deliberately enriched with gold. The cells are harvested, and then broken open. The resulting lysates are then filtered and contain complexed forms of the metal.
