Background:
Drinking adequate water is crucial for overall good health because water aids digestion, proper metabolism, and circulation in the body. Proper hydration is also the most important factor for healthy and youthful looking skin. The epidermis is the outer layer of the skin, which is exposed to the environment constantly and experiences a variety of conditions including temperature changes, dryness, humidity, and pollution. These factors can easily damage and manipulate the skin’s protective barrier function leading to increased moisture loss, dryness, flaky skin, and even wrinkles over time. However, when skin receives an adequate amount of hydration, it is important to maintain and prevent the loss of moisture through the epidermis, which is commonly referred to as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Nourishing materials are utilized in personal care to deliver exceptional skin hydrating, moisture-boosting benefits to help strengthen the skin’s barrier, prevent water loss and maintain the adequate amount of hydration necessary for a brighter complexion.
Within our skin cells, there are designated moisture balancing protein channels, generally referred to as aquaporins. Epidermal moisturization can be improved by increasing aquaporin-3 activity within the dermis. Aquaporin-3 are synthesized by human keratinocytes as a means to enhance moisture of the skin by increasing osmosis between the dermis and the stratum corneum. Aquaporin-3 function as the mechanism that allows water to move against the concentration gradient to where water is deficient. Improving osmotic function is a novel approach for improving skin moisture. Research studies have indicated that aquaporin-3 are involved in skin hydration, elasticity, barrier function, and wound healing.
Optimal epidermal hydration can increase cellular metabolism so cells function more efficiently. By increasing cellular efficiency, certain cellular activities such as protein production also increase. Proteins such as collagen are vital for epidermal integrity. Increasing intracellular hydration may, not only improve the skin but also decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Water is essential for life as well as for our health and skin. Well-hydrated skin appears clearer, youthful and plump with a lit-from-within glow. mix until normal appearance is restored.
