Collagen has always been a hot topic of daily conversation and now people are realizing that elastin is equally important when it comes to the skin. FSS Elastin Hydrolysate OS can be used for easy incorporation into the oil phase of formulations. While typically water-soluble, we have developed an oil soluble version by reacting low molecular weight elastin hydrolysate with coconut oil fatty acids. The result is a fatty acid condensate for easy incorporation into the oil phase of formulations to restore a youthful appearance by moisturizing and conditioning the skin.
Collagen and elastin are proteins in the skin that work synergistically to give the skin support and structure. These proteins start to decrease as early as our 20’s and aged skin becomes more noticeable over time. Elastin is primarily found in the skin while collagen is found in ligaments and tendons. Collagen aids in the stretching of elastin, by not allowing it to stretch to its breaking point. As we often hear a lot about collagen, elastin is also needed to combat signs of aging.
Elastin is a large fibrous protein that is comprised of spiral filaments that are often compared to springs. These elastin fibers can stretch up to 1.5 times their length and have the ability to snap back to their original shape. Elastin is primarily composed of amino acids and is essential for the shape of our bodies, allowing tissues to regain their shape. After the skin stretches, these amino acids work to bring the skin back to its original shape due to their interlinking chains. This unique interlinking is ultimately responsible for elastin’s flexibility. These flexible chains allow for the formation of a flexible film on the skin and hair that enhances suppleness and helps retain moisture. The more flexible our skin is the less signs of damage it will show, making elastin a beneficial component in skincare. When used in hair care this protective film helps to prevent breakage while maintaining the hair’s natural moisture levels.

This environmental stress damages our skin and hair’s elastin fibers and over time these once healthy fibers are replaced with damaged, less effective elastin fibers. These fibers then degenerate and separate into fragments causing modifications to our skin, commonly known as wrinkles.
