FSS HFCI Complex PF

HFCI = Hair Follicle Catagen Induction

Preserved with Leucidal Liquid - Water Soluble

Hair undergoes a growth pattern unique for mammalian tissue. Hair follicles (HF) cycle through what is typically described as three distinct phases, although many researchers are careful to subdivide them further. Hair growth activity starts in the anagen phase where the hair follicle functions as a factory devoted to producing hair. The hair produced at this stage is imparted with color by the implantation of melanin directly from the melanocytes to the hair cortical cells.

After a set period, depending on the individual as well as the physical location of the HF on the body, the anagen phase ceases and catagen is initiated. Catagen is characterized by the abrupt cessation of growth and pigmentation of the hair fiber. At this time, there is also a rapid and intense involution of the HF. Catagen is followed by the telogen phase. Typically considered to be a resting phase where the HF prepares for the next anagen phase, some researchers believe that telogen is responsible for regulating the growth cycle, function like a brake slowing the onset of the anagen phase.

Inhibiting hair growth can be looked at in a variety of ways; however, the most practical target is the transition from anagen to catagen. There are innumerable factors that affect the transition ranging from intense stress, or irritation to a variety of growth factors. By focusing on two prominent pathways, we have been able to develop a complex intended to inhibit dramatically the growth of hair by ending anagen. Ornithine Decarboxylase (ODC) is the enzyme responsible for the conversion of the amino acid L-Ornithine to polyamines. Polyamines, specifically the cationic polyamines Putrescine and Spermidine, are required for cell proliferation and differentiation. ODC levels are elevated during anagen and drop off to basal levels during catagen and telogen. It has also been reported that activity such as hair plucking which will induce hair growth also produces a commensurate induction in ODC production1.

FSS HFCI Complex PF is a combination of flavones isolated from Cocoa through a proprietary fermentation process, and a decapeptide mimicking the binding sequence of FGF-5. The decapeptide reduced the amount of time the HF remains in anagen, thereby limiting the possible window for hair growth. At the same time, the flavones present in the Cocoa inhibit ODC activity slowing the rate at which growth may occur.

Used in conjunction with a keratolytic agent such as Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein and 3-Hydroxybenzoic Acid to reduce existing hair FSS HFCI Complex PF will work to create a visible change in the thickness of hair.
