Aging is a process that occurs naturally and with aging comes changes in skin properties including morphology, physiology and mechanical properties. These changes result in the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles on the face, neck, hands, and upper arms. The amount of wrinkles found varies from person to person depending on factors such as sun exposure, lifestyle and diet.
The skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis (outer layer), the dermis (middle layer) and the subcutaneous tissue (fatty bottom layer). As a person ages all three of these layers go through considerable transformations but the most significant occur in the top two layers. The epidermal cells become thinner causing noticeable difference in the transparency and the moisture of the skin. The dermal layer also thins but this is due to the degradation of collagen and elastin, two of its most important components. The loss of these materials causes skin to lose elasticity and to wrinkle and sag.
The extra cellular matrix is primarily composed of proteoglycans which are made up of a protein bonded to a carbohydrate. The most common carbohydrate in this combination is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG) while one of the most common proteins is collagen which is able to give the skin firmness and structure. With age comes a disorganization of the extracellular matrix. The collagen protein degrades and disperses and water is allowed to move about more freely within the body. GAGs have a negative charge which allows them to have a high affinity for water while their structure allows them to occupy a large volume in relation to their mass. This combination may cause them to retain water and plump efficiently.
One of the most abundant GAGs found in the skin is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial and neural tissues. It is one of the chief components of the extracellular matrix contributing significantly to cell proliferation and migration. Commonly uses in cosmetic formulations, hyaluronic acid readily binds moisture in the skin boosting moisturization. Injections of hyaluronic acid are commonly used today by plastic surgeons to temporarily fill and smooth wrinkles by adding volume under the skin, the effects typically last for six months.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are used to transmit electrical charges between a neuron and another cell. Neurotransmitters are typically categorized into three groups which consist of amino acids such as glutamic acid and gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA), peptides such as somatostatin and neurotensin and monoamines such as dopamine. GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. GABA is capable of stimulating action potentials in cells. Its popularity in cosmetic and personal care applications is attributed to its ability to relax superficial muscle fibers thus reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.
MicroVector Plump GABA-HYA use a combination of these ingredients to moisturize and plump while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. MicroVectors are composed of dehydrated components of the extracellular matrix interdispersed with silica nanoparticles in an anhydrous carrier to create an opaque gel. In the MicroVectors system, the silica vectors help to deliver protein components to the newly disordered extracellular matrix. This silica transfer system allows the “nanovector” to penetrate the skin and deliver the active. When the nanovector makes contact with water, it is able to hydrate and swell therefore mimicking the biological ordering of the extracellular matrix.
MicroVector Plump GABA-HYA use this sophisticated delivery system which allows them to be deposited into the skin for a plumping effect. MicroVectors take advantage of the anionic properties of the skin by attracting cations in the excess of water causing an osmotic reaction and therefore swelling of the nanovector decreasing the appearance of wrinkles. This technology is effective for plumping both the skin and lips.
Several studies and demonstrations were performed to show the plumping ability of MicroVector Plump GABA-HYA. The first of which was a simple coefficient of expansion to quantify the swelling capability of the material against a competitive product. The second demonstration also gave both visual and data points to support the swelling and moisture binding capabilities of NanoVector Plump GABA-HYA. à Studies available upon request.
An 11-person, in vivo study was performed to evaluate the impact of the MicroVector Plump GABA-HYA on stratum corneum moisturization. A 12.1% increase was seen 1-hour post application. The epithelial characteristics of 20 female subjects was also evaluated for determine the effects of a product containing MicroVector Plump GABA-HYA on wrinkle depth, volume, complexity, and smoothness.
