BACKGROUND
Aging is a process that occurs naturally and with aging comes changes in skin properties including morphology, physiology and mechanical properties. These changes result in the appearance of fine lines or wrinkles on the face, neck, hands, and upper arms. The amount of wrinkles found varies from person to person depending on factors such as sun exposure, lifestyle and diet.
The skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis (outer layer), the dermis (middle layer) and the subcutaneous tissue (fatty bottom layer). As a person ages all three of these layers go through considerable transformations but the most significant changes occur in the top two layers. The epidermal cells become thinner causing noticeable difference in the transparency and the moisture of the skin. The dermal layer also thins but this is due to the degradation of collagen and elastin, two of its most important components. The loss of these materials cause skin to lose elasticity and to wrinkle and sag. Skin firmness depleting as one ages is due to the loss of collagen and elastin, skin proteins that are responsible for elasticity, tone, and texture. While we cannot turn back the clock, skin care products that provide anti-aging benefits can give consumers a revived and youthful aesthetic.
SCIENCE
FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS utilizes the water-binding properties of hyaluronic acid to absorb water from the skin, causing them to plump and fill in the appearance of wrinkles. MicroVectors are composed of dehydrated components of the extracellular matrix interspersed with silica microparticles in an anhydrous carrier to create an opaque gel. In the MicroVectors system, the silica vectors help to deliver protein components to the newly disordered extracellular matrix. This silica transfer system allows the ‘microvector’ to penetrate the skin and deliver the active. When the microvector makes contact with water, it is able to hydrate and swell therefore mimicking the biological ordering of the extracellular matrix and decrease the appearance of wrinkles.

EFFICACY
An in-vivo skin smoothing study was performed to determine an increase in skin smoothness using FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS. This study was based on comparing silicone impressions that were made of the test sites before and after the 30 day, twice daily, treatment on 20 (M/F) subjects between the ages of 38 and 53. Two areas on the subject’s cheeks as well as two areas along the outer eye were selected for the trial. The results in Figure 1 indicate that FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS is capable of reducing the appearance of Crow’s feet by 12.0% and reducing the appearance of wrinkles on the cheeks by 4.0%.after the study period. An 11-person, in-vivo study was performed to evaluate the impact of the FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS on stratum corneum moisturization. Initial stratum corneum values were measured prior to the application of the test product for baseline values. Measurements were then taken 1 hour after FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS was applied. As illustrated in Figure 3, a 12.4% increase was seen 1-hour post application indicating that FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS is capable of increasing stratum corneum moisturization. FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS may be added to anhydrous systems to effectively increase epidermal moisture.
Another in-vivo study was conducted to assess the effects that FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS has on skin characteristics, such as tone, elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles. 20 (M/F) subjects applied a lotion containing 4.0% FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS to their face twice daily for 60 days. The results in Figure 2 indicate FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS is capable of increasing epidermal tone by 91% while improving epidermis elasicity by 63%. FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS also decreased the appearance of crow’s feet by 12% while decreasing fine lines and wrinkles on the cheeks by 10%. FSS MicroVector Plump Southernwood HYA OS can be recommended to increase skin tone and elasticity for anti-aging benefits.
