Stress is an ugly word that we often ruminate on for days or weeks! Whether emotional or physical, we will do as much as possible to reduce it. Continuous emphasis on the ramifications of sun-bathing without sunscreen, and the ill effects that both pollution, and fast-paced lifestyles, have on our skin have caught consumers' attention. Painted in our minds are the images of leather-textured skin and unsightly wrinkles. Although stress comes in a variety of forms, there is a solution that can help treat the primary contributing fact - inflammation.
β-Glucans are polysaccharides, or carbohydrates, comprised of glucose that are linked together by glycosidic bonds. β-Glucans function as bio-active modulators that can help reduce stress by interacting with Langerhans cells and keratinocytes. Langerhans cells are dendritic cells in our skin which produce keratin, a structural protein that comprises both our hair and finger nails. Interactions between β-Glucans and these cells have been observed to reduce sensitivity reactions induced by inflammation. This is, of course, our body's natural response to insult, whether it is an insect bite, irritating substances, or an invading pathogen. Unfortunately, inflammation perpetuates damage and can contribute to premature aging. As a result, actives that help reduce stress and inflammation are important ingredients for use in personal care applications.
Glycans were originally believed to modulate wound-healing by stimulating macrophages to release growth factors and cytokines. Interestingly, research has shown that normal dermal fibroblasts have glucan receptors, which suggests that glucans can directly affect collagen production. Research has, in fact, confirmed that glucans are capable of increasing collagen synthesis, which is helpful for wound repair and cellular renewal.
FSS Oat Extract Beta is obtained by the fermentation of oat extract in the presence of Lactobacillus. Oats contain high concentrations of β-Glucans. FSS Oat Extract Beta is standardized for beta-glucan content from 1.5 to 2.5%. This product's molecular weight ranges between 200k and 500k Daltons. FSS Oat Extract Beta is a water-soluble ingredient that is perfect for use in a variety of skin care applications to provide conditioning and anti-aging benefits. Please note, when formulating, it is recommended to maintain a pH range between 4 and 7 at a temperature below 70° Celsius.
