Pomegranate (Punica granatum) originating from western Asia can now be found in Mediterranean countries, tropical America, Japan, and China. It is a small tree of approximately 15 feet high with fruit size comparable to an orange, having an acidic pulp and numerous seeds. The fruit is of a shiny reddish or yellowish green color when matured. The main elements of the bark are punicotannic acid, gallic acid, mannite, alkaloids and beta-sitosterol. The juice of the pomegranate has been utilized for pharmaceutical purposes because of its citric acid and sodium citrate content. Due to their tannin content, extracts of the bark, leave, and fruit have been given as astringents and used for treating diarrhea and hemorrhages. A decoction of the dried flowers are used as remedy for bronchitis and throat inflammation in certain parts of North America.
The pomegranate fruit is known to contain anthocyanidin and hydrolyzed tannins with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to, a variety of antioxidants; among them most importantly are the high levels of polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that play a key role in skin cancer prevention and plaque buildup in the arteries. Studies have shown the ability of polyphenols-rich elements to inhibit low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and heart diseases, a result based on the capability of the polyphenols to scavenge reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Researchers believe pomegranate to be the most potent antioxidant against LDL oxidation, when compared to the other acidic fruits1.
