Beauty Balms, or B.B. creams, are the latest, greatest and most popular items on the cosmetic market, particularly in Asia and Europe. Originally formulated in Germany, these creams were developed by dermatologists to protect, soothe and refine skin after laser surgery. However, B.B. creams were providing an additional, unforeseen benefit; light coverage that masked scarring, problem skin and other blemishes. Amazing! Suddenly, these balms, intended as a post-operative topicals, were seen as cosmetic geniuses, imparting benefits that nourished the skin, such as: Intense moisturization, UV protection, alleviation for skin issues and improvement in skin texture, reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, all while showering the skin with potent anti-microbial, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties.

In order to capitalize on this discovery, the manufacturer was set out to create an efficacious product with intriguing marketability for finished products. Using ingredients such as Lactobacillus bulgaricus Ferment Filtrate and Salix alba (White Willow) Bark Extract, Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex came to fruition.

The complex is a ferment derived from Lactobacillus bulgaricus. In order to stimulate the active compounds that are produced by these bacteria, prebiotics derived from soy and chicory were used to supplement the culture media and optimize the growth conditions for the organism. Then, various filtration techniques were used to isolate and extract the active compounds. The result of fermentation yielded a product capable of enhancing the overall function of the cells while potentiating the antioxidant activity of Lactobacillus bulgaricus. By enhancing cellular function, this product increases renewal and repair to help improve epidermal integrity and the barrier function of the skin. Additionally, Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex has been shown to increase collagen synthesis, which can improve the skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Collagen is a major component of the skin. In order to test for an increase in Collagen Type I production, human fibroblasts were cultured by distributing approximately 6000 cells per petri dish in vitro in a 10% Fetal Calf Serum (FCS) medium for twenty four hours. The cells were then removed and placed into an amino acid deficient medium that was supplemented with 1%, 2%, or 4% Lactobacillus bulgaricus Ferment Filtrate or with an amino acid deficient Control. These samples were then incubated for 48 hours before an ELISA Assay was conducted. The results demonstrated that Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex was effective for increasing collagen production when incorporated into a solution at 1%, 2% and 4%.

In addition to increasing collagen production, the manufacturer was interested in determining the product’s ability to enhance cellular renewal. A Dansyl Chloride Assay was conducted. The test materials used included an unloaded vehicle, a 4% Glycolic Acid ointment and a 10% Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex ointment. A 5% Dansyl Chloride solution was prepared by dispersing Dansyl Chloride 95% (Sigma) in petroleum. Approxiamtely 2.0g of each ointment was applied to three patches on the volar forearm of each panelist. The material was allowed to remain in place for 24 hours, at which time any excess ointment was removed. Then 50μL of each sample was applied to the respective test sites once per day.

These sites were examined daily under ultraviolet light for fluorescence (SL-3660 Long Wave Ultra Violet, Black Light Easter Corp). The test was continued until no fluorescence was detected at any site on any panelist. The results show that using 10% Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex increases the cycle rate of complete cellular renewal. The potential for an increase in skin hydration was also tested. Ten subjects, male and female, applied 2mg of the test material, twice daily, on their volar forearms. A Novameter (9003 DPM) was used to measure skin hydration over a period of 30 days. The solution containing 10% Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex proved more effective than both Glycerin and Hyaluronic Acid in increasing hydration.

They opted for a natural, yet innovative, approach to inducing cell lysis. This particular step enables the product to provide maximum benefits to the skin. White Willow (Salix alba) Bark was chosen as the vehicle to induce cell lysis. The bark produces natural salicylates which are involved in endogenous signaling. Specifically, these natural salicylates are known for their role in mediating a plant’s defense against pathogens. This role in resistance to pathogens is played by inducing the production of pathogenesis-related proteins. And it is these same salicylates that are used to lyse the Lactobacillus bulgaricus cells. Furthermore, given that these salicylates are not removed during the manufacturing process, the finished product offers the additional benefits associated with this phytocompounds.

As previously mentioned, salicylic acid has been identified as part of a plant’s endogenous defense mechanism against invading pathogens. Fortunately, the bark of white willows has been recognized as a source of natural salicylates, which have been shown to be effective anti-microbial agents.

In order to demonstrate the ability of Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex to act as an anti-microbial, a zone of inhibition for 2% Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex was determined in relation to the zones of inhibition for 1% salicylic acid and butylene glycol against both S. aureus and P.acnes, two common bacteria found on the facial skin.

However, salicylic acid has been shown to exhibit unique skin properties in addition to promoting anti-microbial activity. Salicylic acid has also been found to significantly inhibit UVB induced NF-Kb activation in keratinocytes. NF-Kb (Nuclear Factor Kappa B) is a cell signaling molecule associated with inflammatory responses. Its activation induces the expression of COX-2, which results in tissue inflammation. Interstingly, salicylic acid was found to have anti-inflammatory effects on even normal keratinocytes.

Active Concepts developed this rich, diverse complex using an innovative, biosynthetic approach in order to deliver an all-inclusive cosmetic product for optimal face care. With a plethora of efficacy supporting this product’s moisturizing ability, UV protection, cellular function enhancement, antioxidant properties, anti-aging benefits and antimicrobial claims, it is clear that Prorevive Blemish Balm Complex is the answer for simplifying skin care.

  1. A true difference maker
Added this to an emulsified serum for oily/problem skin, and we can't believe the difference. We're testing in a couple of other formulas, and so far--impressed! Leaves skin dewy, healthy-looking, no breakthrough oily shine and helps breakouts. Perfect.
