This type of treatment consists of priming the skin with plentiful nutrients isolated from sea water. These nutrients can be absorbed by the skin via warm sea water baths or by directly applying sea silt extracts onto the skin.
Water from some of the most beautiful and breathtaking places in the world, such as the Hawaiian coasts, happen to possess the highest concentration of essential minerals. With this in mind, Active Concepts has developed FSS Sea Silt BioFerment G, a fermented extract using sea silt that originates off the coast of Hawaii. This particular type of silt is rich in red clay and numerous essential minerals. The distinct color of the clay is attributed to the presence of iron, an essential mineral for a host of metabolic processes in the body. In fact iron is required for proper protein formation, DNA synthesis and cell maturation. For this reason, we can help achieve a youthful, fresh and revitalized complexion by normalizing the levels of iron on the skin.
Hawaiian sea silt also contains high concentrations of sodium, a mineral which has been shown to be capable of regulating osmotic pressure. By definition, osmosis consists on the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane along a concentration gradient. Our cells are always striving to maintain osmotic balance, unfortunately this balance is difficult to achieve. An imbalance in osmotic pressure contributes to cellular stress which can in turn contribute to shrinkage or expansion of the cell and can eventually cause cell death. For this reason, it is crucial to prime the skin with nutrients that are capable of regulating osmotic pressure, such as sodium.
As previously mentioned, sea silt itself can provide numerous health benefits to the skin. Unfortunately its use in cosmetic applications is somewhat limited. Not only can it be difficult to disperse in a formula, sea silt can also be somewhat abrasive. In order to overcome this issue, we have created a fermented sea silt extract that is capable of providing the benefits associated with sea silt without any of the constraints. Additionally, the fermentation process is useful for creating bio-active minerals that our bodies can easily recognize and therefore process more efficiently.

An in vitro study was conducted to evaluate the capacity of FSS Sea Silt BioFerment G to increase aquaporin expression. It clearly demonstrated that this ingredient can significantly increase aquaporin 3 expression in a dose dependent fashion. FSS Sea Silt BioFerment G was tested at concentrations of 0.25% and 0.5%. These concentrations increased aquaporin expression by 26% and 31% respectively. 30 ng/ml of EGF, which was used as a positive control, was capable of increasing aquaporin expression by 32%. However, given that EGF is very expensive, its use in cosmetics is fairly limited. Therefore FSS Sea Silt BioFerment G can be used in lieu of EGF as a cost effective alternative for increasing aquaporin expression.
Given that FSS Sea Silt BioFerment G was shown to increase aquaporin expression, an in vivo study was conducted to evaluate the extent at which this ingredient increases skin hydration. The study was carried out with 5 subjects between the ages of 23 and 37 years old. All subjects were asked to apply an O/W emulsion containing 10% FSS Sea Silt BioFerment G on one forearm and the same O/W emulsion with no additives on the other forearm. The treatments were applied twice daily for 28 days and hydration measurements were taken at baseline and again at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days later. Our study illustrated a vast improvement in skin hydration when using FSS Sea Silt BioFerment G over the course of 28 days. Studies available upon request.
