FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF

The first thing we notice about people is their skin, and so the last thing we want is to do is leave a bad first impression by having oily, dry, or oily/dry skin. Seborrhea, also known as seborrhic dermatitis or common dandruff, can result in a variety of conditions such as scales, redness, itchiness, oiliness, or even oily- and dryness simultaneously. Regular moisturizing does not fix this situation, but may actually even increase redness. Seborrhea is due to the excessive secretion of sebum on the surface of the stratum corneum, and excess secretion of sebum also aids in the proliferation of bacteria, which may lead to acne and irritation.

Previous treatments for seborrhea typically involved the use of talc for absorbing and masking shine, but this leaves a heavy build-up on the skin and merely masks the problem. FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PF was developedto protect against the production and secretion of excess sebum. This active ingredient comes from Gallotannins and Ellagitannins from Meadowsweet, which belongs to the Rosaceae family. FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF regulates sebum production and secretion so that we are not just covering up the problem but we are controlling it and offering a solution for prevention.

Sebum primarily comes from the sebaceous glands, which are in high abundance on the face, chest, and shoulders. After sebum is produced it then migrates into lipid-filled cells and is eventually secreted onto the surface of the stratum corneum through the pores. Sebum is comprised of 4 components: triglycerides, squalene, waxes, and sterols; sterols are the only element that are not produced within the sebaceous glands. Triglycerides are the primary components of sebum and are the preferred target for bacteria when inhabiting the sebaceous ducts.

FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF reduces the activity of the sebaceous glands by inhibiting the activity of 5a-reductase; it should limit the amount of sebum secretion due to an astringent effect by its tannins; and it may prevent acne that is caused by bacterial proliferation. The enzyme 5a-reductase is accountable for the production of the androgen hormone dihydrotestosterone that generates the sebaceous glands’ activation, and so by inhibiting 5a-reductase, we can considerably reduce the amount of sebum produced. Furthermore an astringent effect is produced by tannins because tannins are able to constrict tissues and contract the pore openings in the skin. Lastly because there is a decline in the accumulation of sebum within the pilo-sebaceous channel, there should be less bacterial proliferation which leads to a decrease in problem skin and should provide a healthier overall appearance.

The specific tannins in FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF that are responsible for its astringent properties are gallotannins and ellagitannins, which act as natural astringents. A study was conducted to quantify the astringent effect in vivo of 5% FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF versus a placebo. Photometric measurement by a SebumeterÒ was used to determine the lipid index (the refractory index that correlates with the lipids on the surface of the skin).

Measurements were taken before use and then again after 30 days of twice daily application. The results showed that 5% FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF produced a decrease in the lipid index in 87% of volunteers, and 73% of volunteers showed a return to healthy, normal sebum levels (below 190 on the lipid index). Figure 1 demonstrates the effects of 5% FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF and its astringent properties. Lastly because sebum builds up in the sebaceous channels, this is typically a breeding ground for bacteria such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes and can lead to skin irritation and acne. Excess sebum favors the growth of anaerobic microbes, which then in turn amplifies the production of other potentially irritating lipids, and surplus sebum also allows for the generation of an increased amount of lipid peroxidase that directly modulates irritation and inflammation. The tannin polyphenols in FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF restrict the propagation of bacteria and thus help to avoid problem skin and inflammation.

FSS Sebum Control Enzyme PBF regulates the skin and may reduce complications resulting from excessive sebum production and thus helps to maintain a healthy balance on the surface and interior of the skin so that we can avoid overly oily or dry skin. We recommend this product for inclusion in all problem skin cosmetics.
