While oxygen is necessary for life, it is also a dangerous foe. Oxidation seems to lie at the heart of almost all damage to the skin and hair. When we speak about the damaging effects of oxygen we are not referring to O2 but to the various reactive oxygen species (ROS), the superoxide anion (O2-), the hydroxyl radical (OH.), singlet oxygen (1O2), and the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Biological systems neutralize the superoxide anion via the enzyme Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) to form the transient hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can then in turn, be neutralized to form water by one of the several peroxidases principally catalase, bypassing the formation of the highly reactive hydroxyl radical. In order to enhance the benefits already provided by SOD, FSS SOD Liposome was developed to improve the delivery of SOD potent antioxidant, soothing and protecting properties. Malonyldialdihyde (MDA) is commonly used as a marker of lipid peroxidation and efficacy results have indicated that FSS SOD Liposome is 100% more effective in neutralizing free radicals than the untreated control!
Unlike Vitamin E, Vitamin C, or other antioxidants such as polyphenols, SOD is an enzyme and as such is not consumed in the process of neutralizing free radicals. Enzymes work like small machines continuously processing so long as suitable feedback is available. SOD also does not generally react with free radicals, only the superoxide anion. The enzyme targets a specific harmful molecule making possible truly ‘smart’ cosmetic products. While there are many reactive oxygen species, initiated biologically to by ionizing radiation, the superoxide anion initiates the chain. The superoxide anion and ROS in general can damage organisms by damaging genetic information, oxidizing proteins, or initiating lipid peroxidation. Often irritation appears as a symptom of that damage, although it may occur at a sub-clinical level. Protecting the organism from oxidative stress when its natural defenses are overwhelmed is one of the key approaches of modern cosmetics.
FSS SOD Liposome is a potent antioxidant that provides soothing benefits and color protection. Due to its solubility in water, this product may be used in a wide variety of hair care applications. FSS SOD Liposome was designed to provide the benefits associated with enhanced delivery due to the unique encapsulation technology used. Liposomes are microscopic vesicles that consist of an aqueous center with a phospholipid membrane. Phospholipids contain a glycerol bonded to two fatty acids and a phosphate group with a polar head. The fatty acid portion of this biomolecule is hydrophobic and is located toward the outside of the lipid bilayer whereas the phosphate group is hydrophilic and faces the aqueous interior. These phospholipid walls are identical to those that comprise other human cell membranes. By incorporating SOD into a liposome we are capable of optimizing their delivery into the skin for enhanced skin attributes to help achieve moisturized, protected and younger looking skin.
