First impressions are often lasting. As a result we want to look our best, and we feel better about ourselves when our complexion looks smooth and radiant, rested and revitalized. Traditionally the cosmetic industry has focused on cosmetics that lift, firm and tone the skin over a period of time. Unfortunately today’s consumers demand a product that delivers near instant effects. This type of product is no longer just a concept, it is a reality; technological advances have lead us to develop a material that allows cosmetic formulators to utilize natural products as the key to providing an everlasting youthful appearance. Extracts rich in phytochemicals are all natural ingredients that can make the complexion appear even, supple and healthy.


Human skin is a complex living organ comprised of many smaller cells that regenerate over time. Although new skin cells are constantly being formed, the rate of formation wanes as we mature. Overtime the production of hormones, collagen and elastin also slows down. Scientists and cosmetic formulators alike have often thought that if we could replace the components of the skin that diminish, our complexion would improve.


Clinicians have focused on melatonin, dehydropeiandrosterone (DHEA), estrogen and progesterone, which are all considered to be anti-aging hormones that affect the appearance of skin. Melatonin is a hormone synthesized in the pineal gland, although it is more commonly known for providing the pigmentation in our skin, it does play a role in the mammalian aging process. DHEA is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands it is later converted into estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are key hormones in mammalian reproductive systems. Estrogen also stimulates the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid (an important moisture factor in the skin).

Finding a source to replace these anti-aging hormones may be fundamental in achieving a more youthful appearance. Replacing these lost hormones in the skin with synthetic hormones has not worked in the past. Synthetic hormones have a slightly different structure and they simply cannot achieve the desired effect. A natural source would be a better alternative. Studies have indicated that low concentrations of topically applied hormones such as estrogen an affect the skin without affecting the rest of the body. Topical estriol (a weak form of estrogen) creams can improve the complexion without raising the level of estrogen that occurs naturally in the body. Placenta contains (in varying amounts depending on species) progestins and estrogens that can be used in cosmetic products to attain the necessary anti-aging hormones needed for a smooth, firm skin.

During the 1940s, the cosmetics industry began using mammalian placenta in skin care products as an additive to stimulate cell growth and reduce the appearance of fine lines. The entire placenta is not typically used in cosmetics; placenta fractions such as placenta extract, protein, enzymes and lipids are more common supplements in products such as anti-wrinkle creams, shampoos, conditioners and moisturizers. Placenta extract contains polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), which has anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial in anti-aging creams.

Soy contains higher levels of phytoestrogens than many other plants. The most common soy phytoestrogens are genistein, daidzein and genistin. Research on soy isoflavones began in 1966, since then claims have been made stating that daidzein and genistein are capable of binding to cell estrogen receptor sites. In 1996 scientist discovered that there is a β-estrogen receptor that has an equal affinity to genistein and 17β-estradiol, yet genistein has only a weak affinity to the α-estrogen receptor. The binding of isoflavones to estrogen receptors is thought to reduce the threat of cancer while improving cardiovascular system functions.

Genistein in particular has anti-oxidant properties and it inhibits lipid peroxidation. Genistein also hinders the generation of the superoxide anion; these antioxidant properties contribute to the benefits of using phytoestrogens in products designed to lift, firm and tone the skin. Chemically, phytoestrogens are said to act as weak estrogens, as a result topical application should be able to stimulate the fibroblasts in the epidermis to generate collagen thus improving skin tone and elasticity.

In terms of cost, phytoplacenta comes from renewable resources and it is more readily available so it is typically cheaper than mammalian placenta. Mammalian placenta products usually contain allergens and harsh chemicals; as a result products containing fractions of mammalian placenta may irritate the skin. FSS Soy Phytoplacenta BG PF is derived from naturally growing soybeans, and the amino acids in the product will soothe the skin instead of irritate it.

FSS Soy Phytoplacenta BG PF can be used in anti-aging and anti-wrinkle creams, it can also be added to shampoos, conditioners, moisturizes and lotions. Unlike traditional mammalian placenta, FSS Soy Phytoplacenta BG PF can also be used as an antioxidant. Phytoplacenta has good water binding properties making it an effective additive in moisturizers.
