Myanmar, previously known as Burma, is a country that borders China, India, Bangladesh, Laos and Thailand. This country is also home to the Thanakha tree, which stands 25 to 30 feet above the ground and resides in the same family as fruits such as the orange, lemon, and lime. Thanakha trees are naturally slow in growth; it takes many years for the tree trunk to grow to just two inches in diameter. The tree must be more than 35 years old to yield good Thanakha. Traditionally, Thanakha is mixed with water to form a thick yellow paste which is then applied to the face and body. The alluring scent makes the experience pleasant to the user and the paste helps to keep the skin cool in the hot weather of Myanmar. After removal of the application, skin has a smooth, youthful appearance.
Thanakha is an integral part of Myanmar indigenous medicine. Preparations of Thanakha are used to cure pimples and acne and in some regions, the leaves are used as a remedy for epilepsy. Also, Thanakha is a very popular cosmetic among younger and older women. Most females and children use it not only as facial make-up but also as a facial treatment. It’s very effective for pimples and freckles and protecting the skin from the sun’s sweltering heat. Girls value it so much that they often will not be photographed unless they have applied Thanakha on their face. Individuals with problem skin suffer from excess oil buildup. This may lead to clogged pores and visible blemishes on the skin’s surface.
