Ursolic Acid is a natural, pentacylic triterpenoid carboxylic acid. This phytochemical is traditionally used as a major component in medicinal herbs, as it is known to improve the health of the skin. High concentrations of Ursolic Acid are present in most edible plants, particularly fruits and herbs such as apples, rosemary, thyme, Eriobotya japonicacalli, and Mallotus beltatus.
When used in personal care formulations, Ursolic Acid has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Wrinkle reduction is attributed to Ursolic Acid’s ability to increase the content of collagen by increasing collagen production by the skin’s fibroblast cells in the dermis.
Over-exposure to environmental stress, specifically UV radiation, is known to weaken elastin and collagen fibers in the skin, resulting in saggy skin, aged with dark spots. Ursolic Acid can help enhance the synthesis of elastin, while diminishing the appearance of dark spots, further contributing to the anti-aging benefits of this active.
