FSS Vegetable Melanin

Now Preserved with Leucidal Liquid

Water Soluble

FSS Vegetable Melanin PF has been isolated and purified from the brown fruit of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera). Date palms are cultivated in desert environments that possess the most intense sunlight radiation known on the surface of the Earth. Moreover, the brown, low molecular weight, water soluble FSS Vegetable Melanin PF produced in the fruit during ripening by the enzyme tyrosinase, protects the fruit from the intense solar radiation.

FSS Vegetable Melanin PF has the typical polyphenol composition of all melanins; it is this polyphenol composition that gives FSS Vegetable Melanin PF antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. FSS Vegetable Melanin PF also possesses strong absorption in the UVA and visible regions of the sunlight spectrum, and is responsible for protection in these areas.

It is well known that during the biotransformation of precursors into melanins the growing melanin polymer is deposited onto a biopolymer backbone. The identity and composition of the biopolymer is dictated by the biochemical milieu in which the enzyme tyrosinase operates. In the case of animal melanins the backbone is a protein matrix; in the case of the FSS Vegetable Melanin PF the backbone is a carbohydrate matrix linked to a polyphenol melanin polymer. The carbohydrate matrix gives FSS Vegetable Melanin PF good film forming properties, and is responsible for the high water solubility and ease of formulation of FSS Vegetable Melanin PF.

Melanin biopolymers are characterized by a visible absorption spectrum that does not exhibit a maximum absorbance. Instead, the visible absorption spectrum is characterized by the gradual decrease in absorbance from 400 nm to 700 nm. Melanins are naturally colored biopolymers, and in addition to the absorption spectrum, they can be identified and characterized by the 1976 CIE L*a*b* color coordinates.

The visible absorption spectrum, and L*a*b* color coordinates for FSS Vegetable Melanin PF are presented below. The color coordinates, and the gradual decrease in absorbance from 400 nm to 700 nm are typical of melanins, and the values of the absorbance ratios (400 nm)/(500 nm) and (500nm)/(600 nm) are also typical of melanins in general, and can be used to identify FSS Vegetable Melanin PF.
