Milk in its many different incarnations is frequently used in cosmetics. Perhaps its popularity is due to consumer recognition for its health benefits. Or perhaps it has more to do with the mystique surrounding Cleopatra. The iconic figure long remembered for ruling Egypt and seducing Mark Antony was said to have bathed in milk to leave her skin feeling soft, smooth and supple and was known as one of the finest moisturizers. Whatever the reason, milk is still a popular ingredient in cosmetics today. Of course with the concerns of animal rights and the risks associated with certain diseases, formulators have had to look for botanical alternatives to animal derived milk products.
But what is milk, other than a tasty beverage that we ritualistically add to our morning cup of coffee or bowl of cereal? Milk is a complex fluid in which the fundamental purpose is to provide nutrition while containing several different types of proteins as well as fats and sugars1. Milk is an excellent source of calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals that can also be used to nourish the skin while delivering moisture therapy. Milk has traditionally been used in cosmetics to provide hydrating, conditioning, cleansing and nutritive benefits. However milk proteins can also be used as film formers in anti-aging applications to help tighten and lift the skin while minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. Natural Components in milk can also be isolated to gently exfoliate the skin leaving it feeling soft, smooth and looking rejuvenated.
Our FSS White Orchid Milk PF is made by pressing the white orchid flowers to extract the liquid. It is similar to animal milks in that it contains a mixture of carbohydrates and proteins that can enhance moisturization offering both skin and hair conditioning benefits. These components present in the milk are needed for cells to regrow, maintain and function properly2. Proteins are useful ingredients in cosmetics as they create a suitable environment for healthy skin and hair due to their ability to bind water and the skin. In addition, white orchids have a wide marketing appeal in cosmetics.
The flowers are a symbol of pure beauty, and convey a sense of exotic and rare mystique3. With the consumer steering away from animal derived products, it has driven a movement toward all things natural. For this reason it’s no surprise that ingredients such as orchid milk are being used more frequently in various types of skin care applications. FSS White Orchid Milk PF is water soluble, making it easy to incorporate in formulations by simply adding it to the water phase of a formula. In terms of stability, it’s advised to maintain a pH between 3 – 8 and to not heat past 60˚C.
