FSS Acerola BioFerment
Preserved with Leucidal Liquid
Acerola Cherries, sometimes referred to as Barbados Cherries or Wild Crape Myrtles have been shown to have both anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. With a plethora of options for synthetic Vitamin C, such as Ascorbic Acid or Ascorbyl Palmitate, Acerola is the all-natural alternative source of Vitamin C that promotes a flawless, radiant complexion and naturally bright skin2. Classified as a Superfruit, Acerola Cherries are an all-natural powerhouse! Most notably, Acerola contains a Vitamin C content 65 times greater than that of an orange, a remarkable statistic for a non-citrus fruit, not to mention, has been shown to have the highest antioxidant activity of fruits in a comparison study5. No doubt that Acerola Cherries are formulator’s choice when developing all-natural, Vitamin C rich antioxidant cosmetics!
Imagine a natural formulation that boosts moisture content, leaving the skin feeling hydrated and supple, while improving skin tone. FSS Acerola BioFerment uses a combination of Lactobacillus and Acerola Cherry Ferment to encourage smoother skin while revealing healthier looking skin4. With Acerola Cherries being the greatest source of Vitamin C among all fruits, Acerola Cherry Ferment can be used to improve skin condition and increase the body’s ability to repair tissues3 without the using synthetic Vitamin C. Vitamin C works to promote anti-aging and boasts generous anti-oxidant properties. Additionally, it is required for collagen production. Collagen is essential in maintaining healthy-looking, young skin, not to mention the vitamin’s involvement in the regeneration and maintenance of many tissues 2. Furthermore, the Vitamin A found in Acerola Cherries contains 1017 IU of Carotene for every 100 grams3. Moreover, Acerola Cherries have over 150 phyto-nutrients including Magnesium and Vitamin B in addition to a multitude of minerals3. Anthocyanins, a parent class of flavanoids, can also be found in high concentrations in Acerola Cherries. They contribute to the highly anti-inflammatory and astringent properties found in this fruit. Flavanoids serve as a protectant property for the skin’s defense against photo-aging. In preliminary research, flavonoids have indicated to potentially modify allergens, viruses, and carcinogens, and therefore may be biological “response modifiers”. Think of Acerola as nature’s toiletry case, carrying the maximum amount of anti-oxidants like Vitamins C and A, Carotenoids and Anthocyanins/ Flavanoids that can be held, making it possible to promote a beautifully hydrated complexion though a one-stop shop.
FSS Acerola BioFerment was tested using an ORAC Assay, Trolox, as a positive control. Both were prepared in appropriate buffers (10 μM phosphate buffer – p H 7.4). The materials were prepared at two different concentrations, using Trolox as a reference for anti-oxidant capacity and prepared at concentrations ranging from 12.5 μM to 200 μM in a phosphate buffer. For the ORAC assay, 25 μl of the test material and Trolox were combined with 150 μl of 10nM flouroscein in a 10 μM phosphate buffer and incubated in the dark at 37°C for 30 minutes.
Initial fluorescence measurements were made at the end of the incubation period followed by each well being injected with 25 μl of AAPH 9 240 nM in 10 μM phosphate buffer). After the addition of AAPH, fluorescent measurements were taken every two minutes for approximately two hours.
The testing of FSS Acerola BioFerment, as shown in Figure 1, shows that 5% of FSS Acerola BioFerment demonstrates higher antioxidant activity than Trolox, a well-known antioxidant. This confirms that formulators can use FSS Acerola BioFerment as an ideal ingredient in cosmetic applications where non-synthetic, potent antioxidant benefits are desired to promote a flawless, radiant complexion for naturally bright skin.
