A few decades ago, sperm whale oil was one of the most sought after ingredients in the cosmetic industry due to its unique conditioning and rejuvenating attributes. However, in the early 1970’s, the sperm whale became an endangered species and therefore its oil was no longer allowed for use in cosmetic applications. It was then that jojoba oil began receiving serious attention as it is obtained from a plant seed and has a chemical composition that is almost identical to sperm whale oil. Unfortunately, over the past year, jojoba crops have been severely damaged due to the extreme weather conditions and therefore jojoba oil supplies have been reduced to nearly two-thirds.

Jojoba oil is a wax ester obtained from the seeds of the jojoba, a shrub that is native to Mexico, Arizona and California. The straight chain wax ester is odorless, colorless and not prone to oxidation, which makes it a perfect functional additive in cosmetics. In fact, jojoba oil has been shown to mimic the sebum regularly produced by our skin, and therefore it has been used to condition, soften and hydrate both the skin and hair.
