Due to the increased interest in the relationship between nutrition and the aging process, the most natural site to begin investigation is the skin. The skin is the foremost indicator of a person’s health and beauty, and thus has been a primary target within the cosmetics industry for years. Utilizing fibroblasts in cosmetics is a pioneer­ing technology that has rapidly grown to be quite popular. Fibroblasts are connective tissue cells that make and secrete collagen, glycoproteins, and other macromolecules within the extracellular matrix and are ultimately important in the maintenance and health of the skin. These cells can be used in many different aspects, such as moisturization, wound healing, and cell revitalization.

FSS DermaPeptide Revitalizing PF was developed, a peptide that stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts, therefore improving cell propagation and ultimately resulting in elevated cellular metabolism, improved collagen synthesis, reduction in wrinkles, and increased smoothness and toning. FSS DermaPeptide Revitalizing PF was found to be stable at a pH range between 2-10 and a temperature range between 40-80°C. These findings are indicative that the peptides are very stable in a variety of me­diums and environments.

It is known that size can be a determining factor when it comes to the function and activity of peptides. Smaller peptides are typically more readily absorbed than large polymeric peptides, so based upon this idea we developed our FSS DermaPeptide Revitalizing PF from rice proteins. Rice peptides have several advantages because they are composed of di- and tripeptides, which are relatively small molecules, typically less than 1400 Da.

Peptides have specific biological functions, such as assisting in enzymatic pathways; though individual amino acids are even smaller than these di- and tripeptides, amino acids solely act as nutritional building blocks and are not actively functional. To determine the effectiveness of FSS DermaPeptide Revitalizing PF, our technical staff conducted a series of tests to show the efficacy of fibroblast cell revitalization, increased collagen I synthesis, recuperation of fibroblasts after UV damage, change in appearance of wrinkles, decrease in skin roughness, and increase in skin tone.
