The desert is often looked upon as a wasteland, void of any life. Often, individuals may travel through the desert and do not realize the incredible life that exists behind the arid, rock-laden land. The landscape of the desert is stark, yet constantly being molded by the strong desert winds, and the occasional rains. Life that exists within the desert ecosystem is unique. Desert plants are one of the major living desert constituents. These life forms are abundant and well adapted to arid, often harsh conditions. Desert plants have evolved sophisticated systems that enable them to more efficiently use and conserve the water that is available to them. 

Woodier desert plants have adapted to their environment by developing long root systems that reach deep into the soil to attempt to reach underlying water sources. Other plants have fanned their root systems into a shallower pattern in an effort to increase the surface area by which they more rapidly uptake surface moisture, such as dews and light rains. Typically, desert plants have small leaves. This adaptation allows for the conservation of water by reducing tremendous loss of moisture through transpiration. Yet others solve this dilemma by dropping their leaves during the very dry periods. Many desert plants may be classified as succulents, such as agave, that store water in their leaves, roots, and stems. 

FSS Desert Blend PF is a botanical blend of desert plants including evening primrose (Oenothera deltoides), sand verbena (Abronia villosa), agave (Agave americana), Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia), Opuntia coccinellifera, ocotillo (Fouqueria splendens), and creosote bush (Larrea tridentata). 

Evening primrose has been traditionally utilized for anti-inflammatory and moisturization properties to reduce dry, itchy skin. Sand verbena is a popular desert plant utilized for antiseptic properties to keep skin healthy and to minimize breakouts. Agave is rich in natural compounds offering wound healing and moisturization benefits for the skin. Joshua tree commonly offers soothing benefits to the skin or scalp. Opuntia coccinellifera is a type of cactus commonly utilized for dry, sensitive skin types. Ocotillo is a semi-succulent desert plant offering nourishing and conditioning properties to beauty formulations. Creosote bush is a medicinal herb traditionally used to address skin concerns. Each of these plants hosts a number of adaptations helping them to survive and flourish in an unhospitable environment. Many of these plants have adapted means of protection from UV radiation and the damage that it often causes using heat shock proteins.
