FSS Eyebright Extract G PF
Euphrasia officinalis, or eyebright, is a skincare superstar known for its impressive benefits, drawing from a rich tradition in herbal medicine. Eyebright has been found to contain high phenolic content, which can protect human dermal fibroblasts from UVB damage. Severe and chronic UVB irradiation can cause photoaging by the production of excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS).1 Although the skin manages ROS with its own self-defense system, excessive and chronic exposure to UVB can break down that system, leading to oxidative damage. These phenolic compounds, specifically apigenin, have also been found to demonstrate anti-inflammatory activity.2 Anti-inflammatory ingredients in cosmetic products are crucial for calming irritated skin, reducing redness and swelling, and promoting an overall healthy and radiant complexion.
The polyphenolic content, specifically phenolic acids and flavonoids, of eyebright also plays an antimicrobial role. An in vitro study showed that eyebright extracts displayed antimicrobial potential towards microbial reference strains, specifically against Gram-positive bacteria.3 Antimicrobial activity in cosmetic active ingredients is essential for product preservation, skin health, safety, regulatory compliance, and consumer confidence.
