FSS IMMOBILIZED BROMELAIN PF

What is in vogue now for cosmetics are the most extravagant ingredients that consumers can barely afford, nor is it something that is at the peak of cutting edge science that customers can barely understand. Ultimately the most sought after cosmetics as of late are simple, natural and functional ingredients that are not only perceived to be good for us, but also leave our skin feeling rejuvenated and revitalized.

Texture is important. Our skin will not appear beautifully flawless and healthy unless it is smooth and moisturized. Exfoliation is key component of any beauty regimen. Some of the best exfoliants on the market rely on the use of proteases derived from milk or fruit, which are capable of gently disrupting cellular adhesion molecules to remove the outer most layer of dead cells along the skin’s surface. Proteases isolated from pineapples are perfect for this application since they are both highly effective and provide exceptional marketing appeal by allowing formulators to capitalize on the super-fruit trend. In addition to culinary uses for their flavor, pineapples are also good sources of phyto-nutrients that may improve our health. Bromelain is the respective enzyme in pineapples that provides exfoliating properties. This protease has also been used to address inflammation. FSS Immobilized Bromelain PF contains hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), a copolymer that functions as a chaperone for the enzyme, enhancing enzyme stability.

Enzymes are large structures that consist of several different protein sub-units that are linked together and held in place by chaperone proteins. The active site of the enzyme is actually a small segment of the entire protein. The enzyme only works when the active site is capable of coming into contact with the polypeptide sequence for which there is an affinity. When proteins become denatured, they unfold and the active site is no longer capable of binding to the polypeptide sequence. The HDI copolymer functions as a structural backbone to stabilize the bromelain so it retains activity longer than naturally stabilized enzymes. Another interesting aspect about using the HDI copolymer is that it prevents self-catabolism, which would normally de-activate the enzyme. By immobilizing the protease with the HDI copolymer, we sterically hinder them to prevent the active site from binding to other portions of the protein. In other words, the HDI copolymer will keep the protease from digesting itself, which is a common problem with liquid proteases. The unique symmetrical structure of the copolymer actually creates strong intermolecular forces through hydrogen bonding that result in elastomers with a high tensile strength, which are also pliable for a soft feel on the skin. The polymer’s film forming properties can also help to improve texture.

Exfoliation properties from enzymes are valuable for addressing problem skin as well as excess dead cells that trap sebum and dirt on the skin and often clog pores. Proper exfoliation may also help minimize the appearance of fine lines and optimizes translucency to combat dulling effects that occur overtime. Ultimately, enzymes can leave the skin feeling soft and smooth while creating a rejuvenated aesthetic.
