Deriving from the Latin word lavare, or “to wash”, lavender was originally used in bath essences. Although, dating back to the times of the ancient Greeks, the Romans were responsible for its widespread use throughout Europe-adding lavender to baths for its therapeutic properties and sensuous fragrance. It is grown as a flowering evergreen shrub mostly in the United States, Europe and Bulgaria. The plant commonly produces gray foliage and purple flowers, although pink, blue, lavender or white flowers also exist.

Today, there are at least 28 known species of lavender. The common term Lavender or English Lavender is Lavandula angustifolia, meaning, “narrow leaved.” One of the most versatile plants, lavender is a fragrant perennial mostly about 2 to 3 feet tall. Commonly associated with the English, this garden herb has obtained a high reputation for its fragrance in soap, and potpourris, yet it is equally important as a medicinal herb. Lavender is credited as sedative, aromatic, and stimulant properties.

Owing to the astringent and natural soothing properties from its aromatic flowers, lavender can be applied to the skin to soothe and protect sunburned skin. Historically, folk healers used a tea prepared from the flowers to heal sunburns and other minor irritations. Other recorded topical benefits are acne treatment, normalization of sebaceous glands, reducing skin inflammation or puffiness and reducing scaring.
