Limes are thought to have originated in Southeast Asia and were later transported to Egypt and Northern Africa in the 10th century. The small fruits then made their way throughout Southern Europe during the Crusades. Limes played a crucial role in colonizing the new world due to their ability to prevent scurvy during the long voyage across the ocean.
