FSS Matcha Tea Extract PF

Matcha tea is considered an antioxidant powerhouse and has been used for centuries in the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony and as an aid to meditation practice, as it is thought to calm the mind and relax the body. Matcha is a specially grown and processed form of green tea. It is unique both in its cultivating and in its processing. The tea plants for matcha are shade-grown for approximately three weeks before harvest and the stems and veins are removed during processing. This period of shaded growth encourages the production of more L-Theanine and caffeine compared to that found in other teas.

Camellia sinensis is the plant from which the different tea varieties which we are familiar with are grown. However, the flavor and levels of active compounds present in each are a result of the different farming and processing methods. Black, white, green and matcha tea all contain polyphenolic flavonoid compounds typically referred to as catechins. It is these compounds that deliver teas’ potent antioxidant activity.

The principle catechin found in matcha is Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCg) a potent antioxidant that is thought to make up over 60% of the catechins present. This unique polyphenol acts as a ROS scavenger to prevent damage caused by the superoxide anion, as well as hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals. It is understood that this oxidation causes damage that contributes to the extrinsic signs of aging. Catechins are also known to have anti-inflammatory properties and may inhibit bacterial growth in addition to providing astringent activity.

Matcha is also rich in L-Theanine, an amino acid that can promote a state of relaxation and well-being. While L-Theanine is common in all tea, matcha may contain up to five times more of this non-dietary amino acid than common black and green teas. This combination of caffeine and L-Theanine is thought to help improve concentration and alertness while promoting calm and relaxation without sedation.
