Mushrooms have long been held in high regard by the Asian cultures of the world. The Chinese, in particular have always deemed mushrooms as having special properties, and have often been referred to as being “spirit medicin Shiitake Mushrooms (Lentinus edodes) is the most widely cultivated mushroom in the entire world. It is esteemed in both the medicinal and culinary worlds and because of this popularity has been the subject of an intense amount of scientific research. In Japan, it is now one of the most popular sources of dietary protein. It is rich in proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, and a wide array of vitamins and minerals includ­ing germanium. Through the vast amount of research that has been performed, Shiitake has been found to have anti-fungal, anti-tumor, immune-regulating, anti-viral, and anti-cholesterol effects.

The daily consumption of Shiitake has been shown to help reduce blood cholesterol levels by 45%. One of the main active components that have been identified in Shiitake Mushrooms is a polysaccharide compound called Lentinan. FSS Mushroom Extract SM PF is useful for anti-aging products as it may help increase the cellular turnover rate of the stratum corneum, increase hydration and increase skin firmness. FSS Mushroom Extract SM PF has been developed by extracting the fruiting bodies of both the Mannentake/Reishi Mushrooms and the Shiitake Mushrooms. After extraction is complete, various filtration techniques are then carried out to produce the final aqueous extract.

Efficacy Studies

Active Concepts performed a cell renewal study by utilizing the Dansyl Chloride Technique. FSS Mushroom Extract SM PF was tested at 10% in an aqueous solution and compared to a water treated control. The areas tested were the volar forearms of 10 panelists. Results showed an 18.5% increase in cell turnover when using the FSS Mushroom Extract SM PF.

A twelve weekin vivo clinical study was also carried out utilizing a 10-person panel to evaluate the effects of FSS Mushroom Extract SM PF on the skin. A standard Quick-break Emulsion with 5% ABS Mushroom Extract SM PF was applied to the face twice daily for the entire study period. Measurements with regard to skin hydration, skin firmness, and fine lines were taken at the start of the study and at the end of the study. A Nova Impedance meter was used to measure skin hydration. Skin firmness was measured via Indentometry, and fine lines were measured by Clinical Grading. Results indicate dramatic improvements in all of the areas tested. Results shown below are averages of the results of the 10 panelists as compared from the first day and the last day of the study.
