Fruit serves as a plant’s means of reproduction, and there are either one or many seeds encapsulated within most. Yet seeds would not be an effective means of reproduction if they were to remain inside the intact fruit perma­nently, which is why fruit also contains phytoenzymes such as proteases. However when considering the inherent utility of phytoenzymes, one should also consider the function of the fruit. Pomegranates contain hundreds of seeds, which are coated in what we consider to be a sweet and tasty fruit that provides us with a good source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

But what function does this nutrient rich matter provide for the plant? To conserve energy, why don’t pomegranate trees just release the seeds into the environment? It has been hypothesized that the fruit is intended to fertilize the soil to ensure an optimal environment for seedling growth, but in order for this to occur, the cell walls of the fruit need to deterio­rate. This is where proteolytic enzymes serve their purpose. Proteo­lytic enzymes disintegrate the cellular walls within fruit so that the seeds may be released into a fertile environment that contains all of the nutritive properties the plant needs to thrive.

Cosmetically, fruit enzymes have been used as a safe means of exfoliation. Exfoliation is an important segment of a skin care regimen, which serves to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells that trap both bacteria and sebum. Utilizing pomegranate enzymes for this purpose is appealing to consumers because of the medicinal qualities as­sociated with this ancient fruit. The word pomegranate is derived from the Latin roots of pomum for apple and granatus for grainy, while its genus name Punica is in reference to the Phoenicians who were predominantly responsible for broadening the fruit’s cultivation region. Grown for several millennia, pomegranates are thought to have originated in an area between Persia and the Himalayan Mountains of India, however the exact origin is not accurately known due to the extensive cultivation. The tree is a fruit-bearing deciduous tree that is capable of growing between 5 and 8 meters tall, with glossy, leath­ery leaves and scarlet, white or variegated flowers that grow to more than an inch in diameter. The size and color of the fruit can vary per cultivar, however they tend to grow to a size ranging between 2 ½ to 5 inches in diameter FSS Pomegranate Enzyme PF. When an enzyme is extracted from a source it can be highly purified to increase the enzymatic activity per mole, or it can be extracted with the chaperone proteins associated with the enzyme to maintain stability so the enzyme remains functionally active longer than the purified enzyme. FSS Pomegranate Enzyme PF is extracted from macerated pomegranate with intact chaperone proteins to maximize its shelf life in skin care products.

To verify that FSS Pomegranate Enzyme PF effectively improves cellular renewal we conducted an in vivo Standard Dansyl Chloride Cell Renewal Study. in vitro irritation results in the form of an EpiOcular assay and dermal irritation assay suggest that FSS Pomegranate Enzyme PF is safe for use in cosmetic and personal care products.

Additionally, FSS Pomegranate Enzyme PF is manufactured by fermenting the macerated fruit with Lactobacil­lus lactis. The fermentation process makes the desired phytochemicals readily available without the need for heat treatments or harsh chemicals, which generally denature active components in most extracts. Selective filtration techniques such as tangential flow filtration are then used to isolate the desired proteolytic frac­tions. FSS Pomegranate Enzyme PF may be useful in a variety of skin and hair care products including, lotions, gels, creams and finishing serums.
