The pomegranate is a fruit-bearing deciduous shrub that has been cultivated since ancient times. C requirement per 100 ml serving, pomegranate juice is also a good source of the B vitamin pantothenic acid, potassium, and antioxidant polyphenols. The most abundant polyphenols in pomegranate juice are the hydrolysable tannins called punicalagins shown to have potent free-radical scavenging ability in laboratory studies.

Many food and dietary supplements take advantage of pomegranate extracts which have no sugar, calories, or additives instead of the juice as healthy ingredients. Many pomegranate extracts are essentially ellagic acid. Ellagic acids is another powerful polyphenol antioxidant shown to reduce heart disease, liver problems as well as promoting wound healing.
