Preserved with PhytoCide Aspen Bark Extract Powder
Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) is widely cultivated as forage or green manure. It also has a long history of use for medicinal application in both Western and European herbal medicine. Typically indicated for conditions affecting the throat and lungs; the medicine’s prime benefit lies in its anti-inflammatory properties, although references are made to possible sedative effects produced by floral teas.
The benefits reported for red clover can most probably be attributed to the potent cocktail of isoflavones present. The most commonly referenced isoflavones found in clover are genistein, diadzein, formononetin, and biochanin A. It should be understood however that these benefits are undoubtedly augmented by a variety of other secondary metabolites and will perform differently in the extract then when isolated and purified.
Isoflavones are currently of great interest within the Cosmetic Industry for three principle reasons. Isoflavones function as antioxidants protecting the skin or hair from oxidative stress thereby decreasing the principle motive force behind extrinsic aging. FSS Red Clover BioFerment is produced by macerating and fermenting the flowers of Trifolium pretense with Lactobacillus. The Lactobacillus allows for a more efficient extraction, precluding the need for extraneous solvents or heat. Additionally the fermentation process is capable of carrying out the bioconversion of the glycones present to their more potent aglycone form.
