FSS ROOIBOS TEA EXTRACT PF

FSS Rooibos Tea Extract PF is derived from rooibos tea, made from the leaves and stems of the plant Aspalathus linearis and believed to occur naturally only in South Africa. The Rooibos plant produces small yellow pea shaped flowers during October. The flowers each produce a single seed. The native population of the Cedarberg area originally harvested Rooibos Tea. Trading with the European population is believed to have begun around 1904. The plant was cut down and macerated and subsequently fermented in a fashion similar to black tea. Rooibos Tea has been historically used in traditional therapeutic remedies as a soothing, caffeine-free alternative to black tea especially for people with sensitive digestion, as well as a general, low-tannin, digestive acid and treatment for eczema and acne.

Rooibos tea is known to be relatively rich in the minerals calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, fluoride, and copper. Rooibos tea is said to contain a range of anti-oxidants from vitamin C to Flavonoglycosides and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). Rooibos tea is often claimed to be as potent as green tea in terms of antioxidant (AO) activity. Generally the AO activity of Rooibos tea increases with brewing time indicating that the activity is most likely due to hydrolysis of the Flavonoglycosides, particularly the quercetin glucoside. This may indicate general anti-aging claims. In terms of other cosmetic claims, rooibos tea is thought to tighten skin, remove blemishes, and reduce irritation. Probably the most interesting property is the supposed ability to alleviate allergic response pointing to a utility for sensitive skin products.
