The bark has been used in creams, lotions and salves. FSS Slippery Elm Bark Extract G is water soluble and can be used in a variety of hair and skin care products.
Slippery elm is a deciduous tree species that is native to the central and eastern United States and Canada. The trees can usually live 50-60 years but some have been found over 200 years old. The slippery elm derives its name from the inner bark of the Elm tree which has a gummy texture. When the powered bark mixes with water it forms a viscous and slick substance known as ‘Mucilage’. This substance was first used by the Native Americans for bandages. During the American Revolution, soldiers used the slippery elm bark to cover and heal gunshot wounds on the battlefield1.
