The Songyi (Tricholoma matsutake) mushroom is considered to be a delicacy in Japan. Commonly referred to as pine mushroom, the fungus grows symbiotically with the roots of several trees in forests. Originally, the mushroom was most commonly found beneath red pine trees in Japan, and is said to never grow in the same place twice. Due to a nematode infestation, the availability of the mushroom has decreased in Japan over the past several decades. The matsutake mushroom is renowned for its unique indescribable aroma and flavor; it is often cooked in soups, rice, or broiled. The pine mushroom contains all nine essential amino acids required by humans and is also a relatively good source of the following nutrients: phosphorus, iron and vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, ascorbic acid and niacin. The main active ingredients of pine mushroom are triterpenoids, which are believed to increase immune system activity while decreasing the risk of cancer. Songyi extract is commonly used in anti-aging and fade creams. The extract improves the overall appearance of the complexion, and gently whitens the skin. As a lightener, the extract is preferred over other chemical agents that are believed to damage the skin causing both irritation and redness. Hydroquinone is one of the first chemicals used in cosmetics as a whitener; and it is now banned in many Asian countries due to the risk of edema, erythema and desquamation.
