Cosmetically, fruit enzymes have been used as a safe means of exfoliation. Exfoliation is an important segment of a skin care regimen, which serves to remove the outer layer of dead skin cells that trap both bacteria and sebum. Utilizing pomegranate enzymes for this purpose is appealing to consumers because of the medicinal qualities associated with this ancient fruit. The word pomegranate is derived from the Latin roots of pomum for apple and granatus for grainy, while its genus name Punica is in reference to the Phoenicians who were predominantly responsible for broadening the fruit’s cultivation region. Grown for several millennia, pomegranates are thought to have originated in an area between Persia and the Himalayan Mountains of India, however the exact origin is not accurately known due to the extensive cultivation. The tree is a fruit-bearing deciduous tree that is capable of growing between 5 and 8 meters tall, with glossy, leathery leaves and scarlet, white or variegated flowers that grow to more than an inch in diameter. The size and color of the fruit can vary per cultivar, however they tend to grow to a size ranging between 2 ½ to 5 inches in diameter. When an enzyme is extracted from a source it can be highly purified to increase the enzymatic activity per mole, or it can be extracted with the chaperone proteins associated with the enzyme to maintain stability so the enzyme remains functionally active longer than the purified enzyme. FSS Modified Pomegranate Enzyme PF DRK is extracted from macerated pomegranate with intact chaperone proteins to maximize its shelf life in skin care products.
To verify that FSS Modified Pomegranate Enzyme PF DRK effectively improves cellular renewal we conducted an in vivo Standard Dansyl Chloride Cell Renewal Study. In vitro irritation results in the form of an EpiOcular assay and dermal irritation assay suggest that FSS Modified Pomegranate Enzyme PF DRK is safe for use in cosmetic and personal care products.
Additionally, FSS Modified Pomegranate Enzyme PF DRK is manufactured by fermenting the macerated fruit with Lactobacillus lactis. The fermentation process makes the desired phytochemicals readily available without the need for heat treatments or harsh chemicals, which generally denature active components in most extracts. Selective filtration techniques such as tangential flow filtration are then used to isolate the desired proteolytic fractions.
